Paul Kimmage's boyhood dreams were of cycling glory: wearing the yellow jersey, cycling the Tour de France, becoming a national hero. He knew it wouldn't come easy, but he was prepared to put in the graft: he spent his teenage years cycling an average of 400 miles per week.

The dedication began to pay off. As an amateur, he represented his country and finished sixth in the World Championships. In 1986 he turned professional. That's when reality hit. He soon discovered it wasn't about glory and courage, and it wasn't about how much training you put in or how much you wanted to win. It was about gruelling defeats, complete and utter exhaustion, and it was about drugs. Not drugs that would ensure victory, but drugs that would allow you to finish the race and start another day.

Paul Kimmage left the sport to write this book. It is a powerful and frank account that breaks the law of silence surrounding the issue of drugs in sport. An eye-opening expose and a heartbreaking lament, it is a book that anyone interested in any sport should read.

    Enjoyed this hard fought story. Paul Kimmage tells a real story. I find it fascinating that a man can power his way that far and then do it again the next day. This book tells you why in language that deserves respect.

    A new recruit to all things roadie I have absorbed as many books as I can. The allure remains but the cynicism rises. It has peaked now and I remain convinced that the peloton is dirty! Will it ever change as long as we are all buying new bikes?

    Seems to Me to be a factual and believable account of Pauls time in pro cycling. I bought this to get an insight into doping in the cycling world bit it's a bit more than that it's also a good read in many other respects ie an account of life as a pro and what foes on in a pros head . At times I thought Paul was bitter and resentful and on reflection now I think he is, as only a man who spent a large part of his life in pro cycling having to accept he was never going to make the mark on the sport that he wanted to due to a bunch 'holier than thou' cheats! If you're into your sport you'll enjoy this book and if you're a cyclist you'll love it!!
